2026 Iceland Total Solar Eclipse

As you cross the barren interior of Iceland, making your way through lava fields, past steaming geysers and beneath craggy cliffs split open by glacial rivers, it’s easy to feel you’ve journeyed back to the origins of the Earth. Now imagine standing under the Moon’s shadow as it darkens the volcanic slopes and totally obscures the Sun.

TravelQuest has been coming to this remote island nation for decades, spending our days discovering new dimensions of its pristine beauty — and at night, scanning the skies in the hope of seeing the spectacular aurora borealis. In recent years, we’ve introduced travelers to the less-visited west, staying in small inns, exploring landscapes dotted with waterfalls and geothermal springs, and visiting isolated farms that are home to hundreds of Iceland’s famous horses.

The west is where we’ll return in the summer of 2026 to witness the total solar eclipse on August 12th. Our TravelQuest astronomer will be there, of course, to ensure you get the most from this one-of-a-kind experience. And we’ll be accompanied as always by the welcoming and incredibly knowledgeable local guides who’ve been sharing the secrets of Iceland’s history, customs, and cuisine for years.

Our viewing site location on the south shore of the Snaefellsness Peninsula gives us an unobstructed view of the 2026 eclipse, but Iceland’s infamous cloud climatology hinders the chances of seeing the spectacle. Satellite photos show that since 2001, eclipse-day skies at the hotel were clear on 8 days out of 23. However, cloudiness in Iceland in August tends to be patchy, and openings in the cloud cover can often be found nearby. With the ability to relocate, using satellite images and forecast cloud-cover maps produced by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the odds of seeing the eclipse increase substantially, to about 70 percent within a one-hour drive. With an aggressive approach to the weather, Iceland’s eclipse prospects become much more promising.

Welcome to Iceland!  Arrive according to your own travel arrangements into Keflavik Airport (airport code: KEF), where we’ve arranged an easy transfer to your hotel.  Later, join TravelQuest and our local guides for a welcome dinner and a preview of your Iceland adventure.

This morning, we leave the city as we make our way to Stykkishólmur, where we’ll embark on a boat tour around the islands.  Watch as sea birds careen and dive and savor the taste of scallops freshly caught from the sea! Then we travel onwards to the legendary Kirkjufell (Church Mountain) which is said to be the most photographed mountain in Iceland.  A Game of Thrones filming location, Kirkjufell is surrounded by cascading waterfalls and lush landscapes, showcasing Iceland’s breathtaking natural beauty.

Today we head out to discover the mesmerizing depths of Vatnshellir cave, a subterranean wonder where lava formations tell tales of Iceland’s fiery past.  As we commence on a scenic drive around the western tip of the peninsula, the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean provide a dramatic soundtrack to our journey, where majestic landscapes unfold at every turn, revealing the untamed beauty of Iceland’s coastal scenery.  We’ll wander through the charming town of Budir, then later, join us for dinner and a special pre-eclipse briefing.

The total solar eclipse is today’s centerpiece. We have selected a carefully chosen viewing site where you will have ample time to find the ideal spot for watching and photographing the eclipse. With first contact commencing around 16:42, you can look forward to 1 minute 56 seconds of totality: the kind of duration, as eclipse veterans know, that allows you to briefly savor the nuances and leaves you with indelible memories for a lifetime. Then in the evening, celebrate the whole experience – and compare notes, photos and videos with fellow eclipse enthusiasts.

Today our journey leads north, to Ytri-Tunga, a secluded beach renowned for its resident seal colony.  Here we’ll have the chance to observe these graceful yet playful creatures in their natural habitat.  Continuing, we’ll visit a traditional dairy farm, where you’ll be warmly welcomed to sample farm-fresh products, each bite a testament to the land’s rich bounty and the farmers dedication to craftsmanship.  Finally, we will delve into history at the home of Eric the Red, the legendary Norse explorer, and be immersed in tales of adventure and discovery that have echoed through the centuries, connecting you to the island’s storied past.

Today as we journey east, we have a look at the enchanting Kolugljúfur Canyon.  Here, cascading waterfalls carve their way through ancient rock formations, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.  Not far off, we’ll indulge ourselves at a geothermal bath, a tranquil oasis where the warm waters envelop you, soothing both body and soul.  And for those seeking additional adventure, plan to participate in the optional Icelandic horseback riding.  This experience offers a unique perspective of the countryside as you traverse meadows and valleys on these spirited and sure-footed creatures.

Today begins at Lake Mývatn.  This unusual lake is surrounded by volcanic landscapes, offering a sanctuary for wildlife and a haven for nature lovers.  Nearby, the mystical Dimmuborgir Lava Labyrinth beckons with intricate formations of lava pillars and caves.  Just don’t get lost!  As we venture further, the thunderous roar of Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, captivates the senses, its sheer force and grandeur leaving an indelible impression.

Godafoss Falls, also known as the “Waterfall of the Gods,” is a mesmerizing natural wonder in northern Iceland.  Here the Skjálfandafljót River cascades over a horseshoe-shaped cliff, creating a stunning display.  The falls also hold significant historical and cultural importance, as legend has it that in the year 1000, the leader threw statues of Norse gods into the falls, symbolizing Iceland’s conversion to Christianity. After which, we make our way to Hauganes for an unforgettable whale watching experience along Iceland’s scenic northern coast.  Set against a backdrop of rugged mountains and picturesque fishing villages, Hauganes offers a prime vantage point for spotting humpback whales, orcas, and even blue whales during their seasonal migrations.

In Sigló, the Herring Museum offers a captivating journey into the region’s rich maritime history centered around the fishing industry.  Housed in a restored herring factory, the museum immerses visitors in the sights, sounds, and stories of Siglufjördur’s heyday as the “Herring Capital of the World.”  The rest of the day is yours to relax and enjoy.

Akureyri, often referred to as the “Capital of the North,” is Iceland’s second-largest city, nestled on the shores of the Eyjafjördur fjord.  Its history dates back to the 18th century when it was established as a trading post by Danish merchants.  We’ll explore the Akureyri Church, perched atop a hill with panoramic views of the fjords and adjacent mountain ranges, then we will wander through the streets lined with colorful houses.  We also spend time in the Botanical Gardens, featuring a diverse array of Arctic flora.  After enjoying lunch on your own in one of the many restaurants, the afternoon is yours to go wherever your curiosity takes you.

This morning we fly back to Reykjavik to embark on a city tour to unlock the vibrant soul of Iceland’s capital.  We’ll traverse colorful streets adorned with street art, and dive into the city’s rich cultural tapestry, from the iconic Hallgrímskirkja Church piercing the skyline to the bustling waterfront dotted with charming cafes.  We’ll spend time at the Perlan Museum, ascending into a realm where science, nature, and innovation converge in an immersive journey.  Then finally, indulge in the ultimate relaxation at the Sky Lagoon and enjoy the farewell dinner to say our goodbyes.

The cost per night, including room, airport arrival transfer and tax: $240 USD per person based on two people sharing one room; $480 USD for single occupancy.

TRIP LEVEL

Moderate: short to medium walks on your own over sometimes muddy, icy, uneven, and/or hilly terrain, with easy/rugged travel conditions.  TravelQuest guests must be able to get on and off buses on their own, keep up with the pace of the trip, and be prepared to carry their own luggage.  Weather in Iceland in August can vary greatly and is often windy, rainy and cold.

Payments & Terms

  • An advance payment of $1,600 USD per person, along with the completed reservation form, are required to secure your reservation
  • A second advance payment of $2,100 USD per person, is due by February 9, 2025
  • A third payment of $3,800 USD per person, is due by October 18, 2025
  • Final payment is due March 25, 2026
  • All payments must be made by check, bank wire, or credit card (with a 3.5% processing fee)

Cancellation Terms

  • Cancellations must be made in writing and sent via email or regular mail
  • All advance payments, less a $500 USD per person cancellation fee, are refundable until February 9, 2025
  • Cancellations made between February 10, 2025 and October 17, 2025 will incur a $2,100 per person fee
  • Cancellations made between October 18, 2025 and February 27, 2026 will incur a $3,800 per person fee
  • All payments become non-refundable after February 28, 2026
  • Airline cancellation terms & conditions are the responsibility of the traveler
  • If payment remains outstanding for forty-five (45) days after the due date and no written communication has been received from you, TravelQuest may cancel your booking, and the cancellation penalties set forth above shall apply.

TRAVELER HEALTH

At TravelQuest we want to be sure you choose a trip that best suits your interests and level of fitness. Prior to making a booking, it is the responsibility of each traveler to thoroughly read the itinerary, and to acquire and understand all pertinent medical advice to determine whether they are in an appropriate state of physical health to undertake the trip. At a minimum, participants must be able to climb into and out of buses without assistance; to carry their own luggage; and to generally keep up with the pace of the trip.
